These trees… is a culmination of the identity exploration Bowers has done for the past couple of years. The exhibition is a reflection of her search for connection to her ancestors, both known and unknown. During her research, Bowers became fascinated by Maroon communities. Maroons were enslaved Africans that escaped from colonizers, settling in the untamed land of the Caribbean and the Americas. They were a constant threat to the institution of slavery. The homes represented in the exhibition are inspired by Maroon settlements in the swamplands of Louisiana and the Great Dismal Swamp between Virginia and North Carolina.
