These trees… is an artists yearning for a connection to her ancestors. Maroons were enslaved Africans that escaped from colonizers, settling in the untamed land of the Caribbean and the Americas. They were a constant threat to the institution of slavery. The homes represented in the exhibition are inspired by Maroon settlements in the swamplands of Louisiana and the Great Dismal Swamp between Virginia and North Carolina.
